Most of the time, February is a month that I want to skip because of the cold and grayness, but not this year. The weather has been mild and the sun has been shining here in the Northeast for the most part. And it’s so nice that we will get an extra day to enjoy it this year.
I was down in Greensboro, NC this past weekend for business and saw some cherry trees in full blossom already. These signs of spring uplift my spirit and bring me joy and energy.
When I was in Greensboro, I also visited the newly inaugurated International Civil Rights Center and Museum housed in the former F.W. Woolworth building where the Lunch Counter Sit-Ins took place on Feb 1, 1960. The display of the original historic Lunch Counter and Stools where four African-American college students sat down in a nonviolent protest at the “white-only counter” is a stark reminder of this monumental event in American history. The experience was powerful and inspiring.
I can’t help but to marvel at how much progress this country has made since 1960. Back then, African-Americans struggled for the right to share the same lunch counter with white Americans, and today we have the first black President sitting in the White House. As President Obama once said “If you are walking down the right path and you are willing to keep walking, eventually you’ll make progress.” We sure have come a long way with our progress.
Speaking of the Obamas, I recently watched Michelle Obama answering iReporters’ questions on CNN online. One iReporter posted the question: “What’s your favorite way to stay fit and health?” Michelle answered: “I try to find things that I enjoy doing.” The First Lady said it best: “Find the thing that is most fun for you… People don’t have to make it complicated. Turning on the radio and dancing is a lot of fun.” (Entire Michelle Obama CNN video)
I couldn’t agree more. The fun of what we do will give us lasting power and will make us keep walking down the right path.
Find your right path, have fun and keep walking!
