CEO Corner - April 2012

April is usually a somewhat quieter month at Crispy Green, but not this year. Business has been going strong since the beginning of the year and there is no sign of slowing down. I think this is a reflection that the country’s economic condition is on the upswing again, and more consumers are paying attention to what they eat and are gravitating towards healthier products like Crispy Green® and FruitziO® for their snack choices.

Perhaps some would argue that I’m being too optimistic on the consumer eating trend. A recent published CDC report showed that more than 1/3 of U.S. adults were obese in 2010. This is a sobering reality.

The most concerning fact is that the obesity amongst children and adolescents has tripled compared to a generation ago. As a result, diseases associated with obesity, such as Type 2 diabetes and hypertension, have increased drastically in people under the age of twenty. For children with these conditions, it is like going through a premature aging process, along with many other social and emotional side-effects that they are likely to suffer from. Often these conditions will continue into their adulthood and negatively affect their quality of life as they grow older.

Fighting childhood obesity is a cause close to my heart. That is why Crispy Green has been a sponsor for Dr. Oz’s HealthCorps initiative for the past two years. Through our involvement we provide free products to various education programs in schools and communities in both the New York and Sacramento areas, as well as to the annual HealthCorps fundraising events.

We at Crispy Green continue to strive to make a substantial impact in the fight against childhood obesity. We have clean, all natural, healthy products that kids love. Those are power “arsenals” in the battle of this highly preventable epidemic.

My optimism on consumer eating habits might be unsupported by the statistics, but I believe that we are at a turning point. Crispy Green’s vision has always been, and will continue to be, to make every effort to be the leading provider of high quality, all natural, convenient food products desired by everyone who wants to live a healthier life. With that strong conviction, I can’t help but to be optimistic about our future.
