Also attending from FDU were Todd Rosen (Director of the School of Arts) and Janet O’Neil (Professor, School of Arts). Karen is currently a senior at FDU, and will graduate this May. She is very excited by this win and the recognition she will receive as she sets out on her career journey. The FDU team encouraged Karen to enter and are thrilled by her win:

“All of the design faculty at Fairleigh Dickinson University are very proud of Karen and her dedication to excellence in the field of graphic design,” stated Janet O’Neil. “Above all she is a wonderful person to know and work with. I couldn’t be happier for her win of the Crispy Green Scholarship Contest!”

This is the second year this contest has been awarded, and this year it was promoted nationally. The program was created to provide an opportunity to Design students to gain some real-world work experience by challenging them to come up with an appealing and relevant design to be used for an actual campaign. The winning design will be used on several promotional items including the company website, in-store signage, social media and a hoodie, which will be worn by a celebrity wellness personality in an upcoming video ad.

After polling target audience members (Gen Z) and obtaining input from several graphic designers, Karen’s entry was chosen as the top design since it best fit the criteria of the contest instructions. The Marketing Team was impressed with the extra effort taken in providing a presentation of the design shown on a hoodie, as well as Karen’s thought process and research on design trends that appeal to Gen Z. The team then challenged Karen to make a few tweaks from the original concept, providing some real-world art direction and revision work that all new designers will need to deal with when they enter the workforce. Here is the final hoodie:

Angela Liu, CEO and Founder of Crispy Green views this program as a unique extension of how the company Uses Food as a Force For Good™. “Crispy Green believes in supporting students as a way to encourage innovation and provide real work experience to young people entering the workforce. It also creates awareness about our company and helps attract new talent as we continue to grow. We encourage any students who may be interested in learning more about summer internships or future career positions with the #1 brand of freeze-dried fruit snacks to follow us on Facebook and Instagram and see what we’re all about!”

Karen’s design will be used in other campaign materials including this merchandising header card (below) and will be part of a national consumer contest to win a year’s supply of Crispy Fruit along with the hoodie!
