CEO Corner – March 2012

March 01, 2012

There are many reasons why I love March.  It is the month when spring really awakens.  This year, March has been especially pleasant. Blessed by unseasonal warm weather, Spring has leaped forward by at least 2-3 weeks in the Northeast.

The other reason that I love March is the return of Day Light Saving Time. Longer daylight hours energize me and entice me to be more physically active. March is also National Nutrition month. Nutrition and healthy eating are once again dominating the national headlines.

When it comes to the topic of nutrition, many people automatically think of the vitamins and other dietary supplements that they consume on a daily basis. Although the dietary supplements can be an important part of your diet, the idea of relying on pills to balance your nutrition requirements has its limitations.  Vitamins and dietary supplements cannot fully substitute for getting your nutrients directly from the sources, like eating real fruits and vegetables.

Most nutrients work synergistically with one another. Consuming vitamin rich food like fruits and vegetables provides the complex environment for the nutrients to interact and exert their maximum benefits. For more information on this subject, read the Harvard Health report: Nutrition’s Dynamic Duo .

Freeze-dried fruit, though not 100% equivalent to fresh fruit, retains most of the nutrients and minerals of the fruit. They are portable, delicious and have a long shelf-live, an excellent alternative for fresh fruit with the added convenience.

The new USDA dietary guidelines recommend that half of our meals should consist of fruits and vegetables. That is certainly easier said than done. However, if you substitute some of your snacks with a variety of fruits, particularly those that do not contain additives or preservatives, it would help you reach the USDA recommended goal without much “sacrifice”. Crispy Green has had some great support from everyone from doctors to nutritionists. Recent blogs written byDoctor Dawn MarcusandNutritionist & Exercise Physiologist, Felicia Stoler, commend the nutrient profile of freeze-dried snacks and  choose it as a healthy option to help meet the daily recommended fruit intake needed for good health.

Enjoy our Crispy Fruit and FruitziO and let them help you to increase your daily fruit intake!
